First Mother’s Day nets first NWSL Player of the Week award for Rodriguez

CHICAGO (May 13, 2024) – FC Kansas City forward Amy Rodriguez has been voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 5 of the 2024 NWSL season.

Rodriguez, 27, scored two goals in a 2-1 home victory over the Washington Spirit on Sunday evening at Verizon Wireless Field in Kansas City, Mo.

The Lake Forest, Calif. native received at pass from Jen Buczkowski, who jumped on the loose ball and tapped an easy pass back to Rodriguez. The USWNT forward took two touches around her defender and sent a rocket of a shot to the left upper corner of the goal. (Goal #1 – Watch Highlights)

Less than a minute after the Spirit equalized, Lauren Holiday held the ball at the top of the penalty box, then sent a pass across the field where Rodriguez one-touched a shot inside the near post. (Goal #2 – Watch Highlights)

The U.S. Women’s National Team member, who missed Kansas City’s midweek game due to national team duty, now leads the league in goals with six and has the Blues tied for second place in the league with a 3-3-1 record and 10 points.

This marks the first time this season and third-time overall that a Kansas City player has been voted NWSL Player of the Week, joining midfielders Holiday and Erika Tymrak who received the award in 2024.

FC Kansas City will return to action Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC at Moda Pitch in Seattle, Wash.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
