Blues Aim To Host Postseason For Second Consecutive Year

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS (August 5, 2024) – FC Kansas City (11-6-5 38pts) will be hosting the Boston Breakers (4-14-2 14pts) for a mid-week match on Wednesday, August 6th. Kick off on Verizon Wireless Field will be at 7:00 PM Central Time. This will be the third and final matchup between the two clubs for the 2024 season. Kansas City is coming off of a 1-1 draw with Seattle Reign FC and Boston visits after a 4-3 loss to Western New York Flash.

On Saturday, FC Kansas City welcomed first place Seattle Reign FC to Verizon Wireless Field. The two top of the table teams faced off for the last time of the 2024 regular season. Both sides have enormous depth when it comes to talent and it showed on the pitch Saturday night. Amy Rodriguez put the Blues on the board in the 6th minute of the match. Lauren Holiday carried the ball and found an open Rodriguez who put the ball beyond Hope Solo’s hands. Kansas City was up 1-0 within the first ten minutes. The Blues outshot Seattle 8-1 in the first half, but that margin would soon disappear. After a quick break, Seattle came back determined to score. In the 68th minute, Megan Rapinoe found Reign FC’s equalizer. After an unsuccessful shot from Sydney Leroux, Rapinoe contained the rebound and netted her shot. The rest of the match was a true test of both clubs but the game would end with a 1-1 draw.

Boston Breakers returned home after a long road trip to host Western New York Flash on Sunday. The last place club lost 4-3 at Harvard Stadium in stoppage time. The first 45 minutes of the match were somewhat quiet as each team only scored one goal. Abby Wambach was the first to score in the 8th minute when she sent a rebound back to the goal and Alyssa Naeher could not stop it. Kristie Mewis would take credit for Boston’s goal in the 29th minute after capitalizing on a stunning cross from Bianca Sierra. The clubs would go to the locker rooms with a 1-1 score. Wambach finished her brace in the 49th minute when she chipped a shot over Naeher to put the Flash ahead. Carli Lloyd and Samantha Kerr worked together for the Flash’s next goal, Lloyd assisting and Kerr heading the ball in to the net. The Flash was up 3-1 with a little under 30 minutes to play. The Breakers then answered with two goals in two minutes. Jazmine Reeves scored the first in the 74th minute while Mewis tallied a brace in the 76th minute. The match was tied up until stoppage time where Sonia Bermudez scored the game winning goal for the Flash.

Wednesday will still be a challenge for the Blues. In the first meeting, FC Kansas City was ending a tough streak and won 2-0 before a much needed break in May. Similarly, the Blues have played every 3 days since July 27th. This will be FC Kansas City’s last home match of the 2024 regular season, but there is a possibility of hosting a playoff game. Boston’s defense will have to watch Kansas City’s tough attacking line including Holiday and Rodriguez.

Kick off on Verizon Wireless Field will be at 7:00 PM Central Time on Wednesday August 6th. FC Kansas City has one more match remaining in the regular season; Chicago Red Stars will host the Blues on Saturday. For tickets to Wednesday’s match, call 855.4KC.GOAL.
