Heather O’Reilly talked to FCKC’s reporter Jillian Thomas

Last Monday, October 27th, the reigning National Women’s Soccer League champions FC Kansas City announced the addition of three-time Olympic Gold medalist and USWNT midfielder Heather O’Reilly who was traded for Morgan Marlborough and Kassey Kallman after having played for the Boston Breakers two years.

After spending over two weeks in Kansas City earlier this month practicing with the USWNT for the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which they ended up winning, O’Reilly had a lot to say about Kansas City.

“I really enjoyed it.” O’Reilly. “The vibe of Westport and the Plaza were great, I look forward to getting back there. I kept hearing about the BBQ and need to check that out. I appreciate the fact that it’s a soccer town. We had the chance to go to a Sporting KC game and the fan base is great, I look forward to meeting our fans and seeing them at our games as well.”

O’Reilly’s family resides in her hometown of New Jersey, during the 2024 NWSL season; her husband will stay in Chapel Hill, the couple’s home.

I’m very excited to join FCKC and the level of play that exists here. I’m extremely impressed with what Coach Vlatko did with the team last year and as I continue to try and better myself. “O’Reilly added.

FC Kansas City’s Director of Soccer Operations Huw Williams described O’Reilly as “a player who brings tenacity and determination”.

“We will now have some of the hardest working players in the league between Holiday, Richmond, Buczkowski and the addition of O’Reilly,” Williams said. “Our fans will not be able to keep their eyes off this team.”

After having played a total of 1874 minutes in 22 games and leading the Breakers with nine goals and five assists last season in addition to her 36 goals for the USWNT, O’Reilly possesses a passion to achieve greater.

“I have an incredible hunger to improve; getting better excites me and this move to Kansas City will make me a better player” O’Reilly said.

O’Reilly has already visualized the type of play she will bring to Kansas City, which in her opinion will connect perfectly with her new teammates.

“I will create opportunities from 1v1 situations and possessions down the wings, which produce shots and or crosses to be finished.” O’Reilly said. “I had the chance to play with a lot of them with the USWNT, which I am sure will provide a smooth transition and ultimately success” O’Reilly mentioned.

Some of O’Reilly’s goals include a World Cup title, especially after qualifying for the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Canada.

“I enjoy the feeling of freedom and joy on the field. I’m happy on the field,” O’Reilly said. “One of my goals is to win a World Cup but for now I am focused on staying fit during the offseason to be at my finest for FCKC.”

“Kansas City is a premier soccer city; I’m really looking
forward to becoming a part of the soccer excellence in the soccer capital of America.” O’Reilly finished.
