NWSL Player of the Week, Sofia Huerta notched her 5th tally of the season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 23, 2024) – Despite defender Amy LePeilbet’s first goal of the season, FC Kansas City was unable to hand Chicago its first loss of the season in front of 1,592 fans in a match that was delayed two hours for inclement weather on Saturday night at Swope Soccer Village.

The Chicago Red Stars (4-0-2, 14 points) capitalized on two corner kicks to extend their unbeaten streak to six games with goals scored by two-time NWSL Player of the Week Sofia Huerta and defender Taryn Hemmings.

After multiple opportunities on both ends, Red Stars’ Vanessa DiBernardo took a corner kick that found Huerta who was able to get a touch on the ball and find the back of the net on the far left post making it 1-0 for the visitors.

Both teams went to the locker rooms with five shots and four corner kicks each before returning to the field for the second half.

Kansas City would answer back in the 67th minute when LePeilbet was able to equalize after heading a corner kick taken by Erika Tymrak, which went past two defenders and goalkeeper Michele Dalton making it 1-1.

Late in the match, Hemmings scored the game winning tally in the 83rd minute after finding the ball, which rebounded off of Nicole Barnhart’s glove and heading it in to make it 2-1 assisted by Michelle Lomnicki.

Next up, the Blues will visit the Boston Breakers on Saturday, May 30 at Harvard University before a two-week break during the 2024 Canada FIFA Women’s World Cup group stage.
