EDMONTON, Canada (June 22, 2024) – Six days after winning Group D and securing a spot in the knockout stage, the U.S. Women’s National Team advanced to the quarterfinals after a hard fought 2-0 win against a competitive Colombian side, which played the entire second half with ten women on the field.

Coach Jill Ellis’ team will be back in action this Friday as the Stars and Stripes square off against China PR for a ticket to the semifinals. FC Kansas City midfielder Lauren Holiday, who has started and played the full ninety in each of the U.S. games, will miss the match along with forward Megan Rapinoe due to yellow card accumulation.

FC Kansas City’s captain and two-time NWSL Defender of the Year Becky Sauerbrunn is the only player on the roster to start and play every game for the USA in 2024. She has played the most minutes (1,239) of anyone on the team. Along with the St. Louis, Missouri native, goalkeeper Hope Solo and defenders Meghan Klingenberg, Ali Krieger and Julie Johnston recorded the team’s third consecutive shutout.

Both teams created several opportunities throughout the match but settled for a scoreless draw during the first forty-five minutes. It wasn’t until the 47th minute when Colombia’s goalkeeper Catalina Perez was issued a straight red card after she took down Morgan inside the box. However, forward Abby Wambach was unable to capitalize from the penalty spot.

Six minutes later, Morgan gave the USWNT a 1-0 lead when Krieger slipped the ball past the defense before she sent a right-footed shot towards goal. Goalkeeper Stefany Castaño got a hand on it but deflected it up and into the roof of the net in 53rd minute. Lloyd then sealed the win with a cooly taken PK in the 66th minute.
