FC Kansas City Looks to Bounce Back

Blues Regroup to Face Flash

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, KS. (July 16, 2024) - FC Kansas City will travel to Rochester and visit the Western New York Flash on Friday, July 18th. Kick off at Sahlen’s Stadium will be at 6:30pm Central Time. The Blues stay on the road after a tough 7-1 loss to Portland Thorns FC. The Flash also dropped the last match, 1-0 to the Washington Spirit.

On Sunday, FC Kansas City did not perform to the standard set earlier in the season. Katrina Gorry scored her first National Women’s Soccer League goal for the Blues in the 30th minute. The Australian international’s goal gave Amy Rodriguez an assist for the night. Portland had five goal scorers: Veronica Boquete, Allie Long, Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair and Amber Brooks. Boquete and Long tallied braces for the night. The Blues tried to make moves offensively and defensively but it was not enough to help. The match ended at 7-1 in favor of Portland.

The Flash also lost a match last week against the Washington Spirit. The New York club held the Spirit scoreless during the first half. The Spirit scored in the 53rd minute off of a penalty kick from Diana Matheson. Both teams had plenty of chances to score more goals. At the end of the game, The Flash had 7 shots while the Spirit tallied 9. The win took Washington in to third place for the NWSL standings.

Looking forward to Friday, the Blues will try to regain composure and control of the game. Abby Wambach has been out of the Flash’s lineup for a good portion of the season. This lets the defense focus on Carli Lloyd, Samantha Kerr and other Flash attackers. Western New York also lost another goalkeeper to an ACL injury, Lydia Williams was substituted out against the Spirit and Kelsey Wys was brought in. FC Kansas City’s recent lineup change that brought Sarah Hagen in to start up top has had a positive effect on the offense. Hagen and Rodriguez split attacking responsibilities and can spread the plays out. The Blues hope to bring home 3 points as the postseason approaches.
