FC Kansas City Drops Home Game to NWSL Leaders

North Carolina scores the only goal in the final minutes

KANSAS CITY (August 10, 2017) – FC Kansas City dropped a heartbreaker at home on Thursday night against the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) leading North Carolina Courage. Forward Lynn Williams scored the only goal of the match in the 86th minute for the Courage and the Blues were not able to find a late-equalizer.

This game was originally scheduled for July 22nd and the Blues came out as the aggressors in that game, but unfortunately weather caused the game to be abandoned in the 39th minute, forcing the two teams to start over tonight.

North Carolina was ready for the Kansas City attack tonight as their front four players pressured the Kansas City defense all night, looking to keep the play in the Blues defensive half and force mistakes.
Veteran defenders Yael Averbuch and Becky Sauerbrunn were able to weather the storm and actually helped FC Kansas City to hold the possession advantage throughout the game. When the Courage did win the ball, they wasted no time in looking for goal, outshooting the Blues 28-6 on the night.
As the match entered the final ten minutes, the Blues defense stood tall and continued to keep the Courage at a distance. Forward Jessica McDonald took a shot from outside the penalty box that was blocked by the KC defense, but unfortunately it landed right at the feet of Williams who was able to put her shot past the outstretched hands of Nicole Barnhart.
FC Kansas City will now head to Texas on Sunday, August 13th to face the Houston Dash at 7:30 p.m. CT. This will be their second game in a stretch that sees the team playing four games in eleven days. The game will be broadcast on the go90 app, go90.com and NWSLSoccer.com. FC Kansas City's next home game is next week on August 16th against the Portland Thorns at 7:00 p.m CT. Tickets can be purchased here.
