Sunday’s game will be fourth game in eleven days

KANSAS CITY (August 19, 2024) – FC Kansas City looks to play their fourth game two weeks when they travel to face the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday, August 20th. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT from Chicago’s Toyota Park. Fresh off two straight wins, the Blues hope to continue their winning streak as the regular season hits its final stretch.

Kansas City is on short rest after playing a midweek game against the Portland Thorns. Kickoff for that match was delayed over two hours due to lightning in the area. After such a long delay, the teams looked a little shaky to start the game, as play was fairly even through much of the opening period.

However, the action picked up late in the first half when Portland’s Christine Sinclair was driving towards goal and was fouled inside the Kansas City penalty box. Amandine Henry converted the resulting penalty kick to put the Thorns ahead 1-0. The Blues fought back in the second half and scored two goals from Yael Averbuch and Sydney Leroux in a span of five minutes to record a 2-1 home victory.

Chicago also played a midweek game as they hosted the Seattle Reign. Jen Hoy scored in the 23rd minute and that was nearly enough as the Red Stars held their 1-0 lead into the final minutes of the game. In an exciting finish though, the Reign scored two goals in added time to stun Chicago at home, 2-1.

These two teams last met early in the season with FC Kansas City holding the advantage in possession and shots. Chicago came out on top however as Julie Ertz scored in the 41st minute to give the Red Stars the 1-0 win.

Sunday’s match will kick off at 5:00 p.m. in Chicago and fans can watch on the go90 app or online at go90.com and NWSLSoccer.com.
