RECAP: FC KANSAS CITY AND THE WESTERN NEW YORK FLASH SETTLE FOR A 0-0 TIE

Rookie Katelyn Rowland made her professional debut and recorded her first clean sheet

KANSAS CITY, MO (May 14, 2024) – FC Kansas City (3-2-1, 10 points) recorded its fourth consecutive shutout with a scoreless draw against the Western New York Flash (1-4-1, 4 points) on Thursday in front of 1,847 fans at Swope Soccer Village. Two FC Kansas City players made their first professional start this match – goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland and midfielder Mandy Laddish.

Despite the final score, the match had plenty of action on and off the ball. Only 12 minutes in, Flash goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo and Blues midfielder Liz Bogus collided in the box. Both players sustained injuries – Bogus played the rest of the game with a severe nose injury, while D’Angelo was immediately subbed out, treated by team doctors and spent the second half with her arm in the sling. Back up goalkeeper Chantel Jones came off the bench to take her spot.

The best chances for both teams came from set pieces. In the 36th minute, midfielder Yael Averbuch sent in a kick from 20 yards out that just skimmed over the crossbar. On the opposite side of the half, Flash forward Lynn Williams got past the Blues defense to challenge Rowland. The UCLA product made a diving save to preserve the team’s shutout.

The match mirrored last week’s in the physicality throughout the 90 minutes. Seven yellow cards were handed out to players – five for Western New York and two for FC Kansas City. The rising tensions culminated in an altercation in the 82nd minute between Flash goalkeeper Jones and forward Shea Groom.

Coach Vlatko Andonovski remained positive despite the lack of scoring, praising goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland’s first performance and the team’s continuous shutout streak.

“She [Rowland] did a great job,” Andonovski said. “She had big saves, which kept us in the match and we are all really proud of her. I believe she has a bright future in this league.”

The Blues return to action on Saturday, May 23rd when they host the Chicago Red Stars at Swope Soccer Village.
