FC KANSAS CITY FORWARD SHEA GROOM VOTED NWSL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Groom leads FC Kansas City with four goals and two assists

KANSAS CITY, Mo (July 14, 2024) – FC Kansas City forward Shea Groom was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 13 of the 2024 NWSL season. (Watch Highlights)

Groom, 22, recorded two assists and scored the go-ahead goal that would give FC Kansas City the late lead and ultimately the 3-2 win on the road against the Boston Breakers on Thursday night at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Boston.

The Liberty, Mo. native’s game-winning goal was scored in the 79th minute, as Groom found the back of the net with a ball from teammate Jen Buczkowski.

The Blues started their scoring run very early in the game when Groom found teammate Erika Tymrak, who not only scored her first goal of the season, but the fastest goal in NWSL history in twenty-four seconds. Another assist came from Groom to Tymrak in the final minutes of the first half, giving FC Kansas City the 2-1 lead at the end of the half.

Groom left the match in the 83rd minute after a collision with Breakers’ goalkeeper Jami Kranich and suffered what was later diagnosed as a right foot second metatarsal fracture, which will cause her to be out for four to six weeks.

The NWSL Rookie is the fourth FC Kansas City player to be named NWSL Player of the Week. The honor was given to teammates Amy Rodriguez during Week 5 of the 2024 NWSL season, Erika Tymrak during Week 15 and Lauren Holiday during Week 17 of the 2024 NWSL season.

FC Kansas City will return to action on Monday, July 20 at 8:00 p.m. ET against the Houston Dash at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
