Blues, Comets hire former beat writer for media relations

KANSAS CITY (April 1, 2024) -- In addition to a number of on-the-field changes, FC Kansas City will have a new face in the press box as well. She is former Kansas City Star reporter Kathleen Gier and she will serve as the team’s new Director of Media/PR Operations.

“I have enjoyed getting to know this team through the past two seasons as a its beat reporter and when the opportunity arose, I jumped on it,” Gier said. “I’m excited to see how the two-time league champions continue to grow in the NWSL’s fourth season.”

Gier grew up in Overland Park and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School. From there, she followed in her family tradition and became a fourth-generation Jayhawk at The University of Kansas. She graduated in 2024 with a B.S. in Journalism and accepted a post-graduate internship with MLB.com covering the Royals.

The Star hired her at the end of that season as a general sports reporter. She covered FC Kansas City, area high schools, Big 12 and SEC women's basketball, the Kansas City Chiefs and the 2024 World Series Champion Royals.

Gier’s main duties with the team will include coordinating interviews with local media outlets, writing press releases, updating game notes and running the Blues’ social media accounts.

"We are excited to have Kathleen join our front office staff,” General Manager Huw Williams said. “She brings with her a ton of experience and an in-depth familiarity with our team. We welcome her on board".

FC Kansas City starts its season at 7:30 p.m. on April 16 at Children’s Mercy Park against the Western New York Flash.
