Barnie to be recognized in special pre-game ceremony

KANSAS CITY (September 1, 2024) – FC Kansas City will play their second straight home match this Sunday when they face off against Sky Blue at 5:00 p.m. CT. This is the third match of the season between these two teams, but the first one to be played in Kansas City. Nicole Barnhart is expected to start in goal for Kansas City, marking her 100th start, the most ever for a goalkeeper in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)

FC Kansas City hosted the Orlando Pride last week at home. The two hottest teams in the NWSL played an exciting match. Lo’eau LaBonta scored her first professional goal, but unfortunately, the Pride scored a late goal from Alex Morgan to secure their win.

Sky Blue is on the road for the first time in three games. They lost both of their previous two away games, getting outscored 10-4. The bright spot for the team has been Australian international Sam Kerr. She has 16 goals for her side this year, more than then next four Sky Blue players combined. In the last game against Kansas City, Kerr scored a hat trick in the final ten minutes to bring her team back from a 2-0 deficit and secure a win.

Kansas City has played 106 regular season games in its history. For 99 of them, Nicole Barnhart has been in goal. The NWSL’s winningest goalkeeper has been the backstop for the FCKC defense since the first ever game on April 13, 2024. Among the NWSL goalkeeping records she holds are most al-time appearances (99), starts (99), and clean sheets (36). Her ten shutouts in 2024 are still the most by any goalkeeper in a season.

‘Barnie’ as she is known to her teammates, will be recognized in a special pre-game ceremony on Sunday with the game scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. CT. Tickets are still available for the match and can be purchased here.
